UTSC principal to be next president at University of Guelph
Professor Franco Vaccarino, University of Toronto vice-president and principal, University of Toronto Scarborough, has been named the University of Guelph’s next president and vice-chancellor.
Vaccarino will begin his new duties effective August 15th, succeeding Dr. Alastair Summerlee.
“Professor Vaccarino has had a remarkable term as UTSC’s principal, with accomplishments that will benefit the University of Toronto, and the Թϱ Scarborough campus for decades to come. He has built a strong foundation for the future,” said Թϱ President Meric Gertler.
As UTSC’s principal, Vaccarino has led the campus in significant developments. During his tenure the campus has grown substantially, drawing outstanding faculty and students to new undergraduate and graduate programs and strengthening its international presence. Vaccarino also oversaw UTSC’s expansion onto the campus’ north zone – including the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre set to open this fall – doubling UTSC’s footprint and setting the stage for continuing expansion.
“A highlight of my time here at UTSC, continues to be my association with the fine faculty, staff and students of UTSC. We have accomplished so much together,” said Vaccarino. “UTSC will continue to grow and thrive as it builds on its many successes and I am honoured to have had the opportunity to serve this community.”
The highly regarded scholar and administrator first came to Թϱ in 1984 as an assistant professor at UTSC. Before assuming the leadership role at UTSC, Vaccarino was chair of the Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Arts and Science as well as the tri-campus Graduate Department of Psychology.
Vaccarino received his Bachelor of Science degree from Թϱ and his Masters and PhD in Psychology from McGill University.
