In keeping with passive house standards, Harmony Commons is well-ventilated and has better air flow than conventional buildings –&nbsp;with the improved air quality intended to help with sleeping and studying.&nbsp;</p> <p>One of the building’s key innovations is that heat captured from various systems, including exhaust air from kitchens and showers, is used to heat spaces throughout the structure.&nbsp;</p> <p>In fact, the building is so efficient that the energy it uses to make more than 3,000 meals each day in its dorms and dining hall is less than that used by two average households.</p> <p>Designed by Handel Architects, Harmony Commons is also fully electric. Since no fossil fuels are burned in heating and cooling the building, it has extremely low carbon emissions.&nbsp;</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-right"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/2024-09/Harmony--Commons-%2825%29-crop.jpg" width="300" height="300" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Harmony Commons has an airtight and well-insulated envelope that prevents heat from escaping. It's also well-ventilated with improved air flow compared to conventional buildings &nbsp;(photo by Tom Arban)</figcaption> </figure> <p><strong>Patricia Escobar</strong>, manager of sustainability at Թϱ Scarborough, notes that&nbsp;typical buildings in Toronto rely on fossil-fuel-based heating systems, but Harmony Commons reduces the amount of heat needed to be generated in the first place.&nbsp;</p> <p>“This results in significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions, which supports our goal of becoming <a href="/news/u-t-s-plan-become-climate-positive-expanded-all-three-campuses">a climate positive campus</a>,” she says.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>While passive house certification is mostly attempted for small-scale buildings, applying the concepts to a building as large and complex as a dormitory-style residence came with a unique set of challenges – and opportunities.</p> <p>Arifuzzaman says that building Harmony Commons effectively “de-risked” future large-scale passive house buildings.&nbsp;</p> <p>“It shows the industry that this type of project can be done in this market and at this scale. It proves that passive house is an attainable standard for future large-scale developments,” he says.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>He adds it also allowed many local people working in the trades to be trained in new construction methods for high-performance, sustainable buildings.&nbsp;</p> <p>“This was a great opportunity to realize that you can contribute to reducing global climate change impact and still live a great quality of life,” he says.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Wed, 25 Sep 2024 16:57:52 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 309508 at Թϱ ranked fourth in the world in research-focused NTU World University Rankings  /news/u-t-ranked-fourth-world-research-focused-ntu-world-university-rankings <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Թϱ ranked fourth in the world in research-focused NTU World University Rankings&nbsp;</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-09/UofT94068_Visualization-Facility_Kundur-Class_March-2023_9_Volpe-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=ZIojF8mM 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-09/UofT94068_Visualization-Facility_Kundur-Class_March-2023_9_Volpe-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=Jg7jfhUh 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-09/UofT94068_Visualization-Facility_Kundur-Class_March-2023_9_Volpe-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=Z-VSk2dE 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-09/UofT94068_Visualization-Facility_Kundur-Class_March-2023_9_Volpe-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=ZIojF8mM" alt="A woman gestures to diagram on a visualization screen."> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Christopher.Sorensen</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-09-06T11:51:19-04:00" title="Friday, September 6, 2024 - 11:51" class="datetime">Fri, 09/06/2024 - 11:51</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>(photo by Matt Volpe)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/mariam-matti" hreflang="en">Mariam Matti</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/global-lens" hreflang="en">Global Lens</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/leah-cowen" hreflang="en">Leah Cowen</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/global" hreflang="en">Global</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/national-taiwan-university" hreflang="en">National Taiwan University</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/rankings" hreflang="en">Rankings</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/research-innovation" hreflang="en">Research &amp; Innovation</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-subheadline field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Subheadline</div> <div class="field__item">The National Taiwan University ranking evaluates universities based on research output and impact</div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>The University of Toronto climbed one spot to fourth place globally in the latest National Taiwan University ranking, which evaluates universities based on their research output and impact.</p> <p>Թϱ’s strong performance in the 2024 edition of the&nbsp;<a href="http://nturanking.csti.tw/ranking/OverallRanking/">NTU World University Rankings</a>, released this week, puts it in elite global company. Toronto this fall, earned&nbsp;one of the highest marks across all of Toronto’s public high schools this year.</p> <p>Nakahara graduated from the Toronto District School Board’s (TDSB) <a href="https://schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/vss" target="_blank">Virtual Secondary School </a>with an average of 99.7 per cent, making her <a href="https://www.tdsb.on.ca/home/ctl/Details/mid/43823/itemid/334" target="_blank">one of three graduates</a> recognized for earning top grades.&nbsp;</p> <p>She says she chose the online school in part due to challenges she experiences with low blood sugar that require her to eat frequently to stay focused – a condition that can be difficult to manage in a classroom.</p> <p>She is a big proponent of advocating for oneself when it comes to accessibility needs.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Even if it feels a bit weird sometimes, even if your needs are unconventional and people may not understand them, you still have to respect them and you deserve to get the accommodations that you need,” she says.&nbsp;</p> <p>When she starts at Թϱ Scarborough this fall, it’ll be the first time Nakahara has attended in-person classes since she was a child.</p> <p>Yet, despite never meeting her high school peers and teachers in person, she says she still felt connected to the school community thanks to being involved in extracurricular activities, including the school’s newsletter and yearbook, and tutoring other students.&nbsp;</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-center"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image conservation by volunteering with the <a href="https://highparknaturecentre.com" target="_blank">High Park Nature Centre</a>.&nbsp;She also volunteered at the Cedarbrae Branch of the Toronto Public Library in Scarborough, noting that reading is one of her biggest de-stressors –&nbsp;particularly the fantasy genre.&nbsp;</p> <p>“You have to be more purposeful when you’re in virtual school –&nbsp;about getting out there, communicating with your teachers, staying focused,” she says. “I like to get out and do stuff, so I don’t really think being online impacted my experience.”</p> <p>At Թϱ Scarborough,&nbsp;she will be part of a co-op program and pursuing a double major in&nbsp;conservation and biodiversity&nbsp;and&nbsp;public policy, as well as a minor in&nbsp;creative writing.&nbsp;</p> <p>She says she chose Թϱ Scarborough for several reasons: the option to take three programs and co-op, the convenience of being near her Scarborough home and the <a href="https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/indigenous-place-making/ma-moosh-ka-win-valley-trail">Ma Moosh Ka Win Valley Trail</a>, which has received awards for its accessibility features and is frequented by Nakahara’s family.&nbsp;</p> <p>Nakahara says she’s looking forward to the extra freedom that comes with being a university student –&nbsp;including the chance to explore whatever interests her academically.&nbsp;</p> <p>“In elementary school, I was maybe a little bored and that made it hard to do my schoolwork,” says Nakahara, who earned her best high school marks in courses such as environmental resource management, calculus and vectors, physics and chemistry. “I think I got higher marks in high school because I was interested in what I was doing.”</p> <figure role="group" maintain her high marks through Grade 12,&nbsp;she says she placed the stress upon herself and knows doing so can be unhealthy.</p> <p>“That wasn’t necessarily something I should have been doing,” she says. “I think sometimes people feel bad when they get low marks, and I felt bad when I lost marks. But school isn’t the only place where it matters to succeed. People can succeed in all areas of their life.”&nbsp;</p> <p>When asked for her best study tips at a ceremony honouring the TDSB’s top scholars, she told the audience of news outlets, teachers and family that everyone is different so there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to excelling in school. In her case, she says she prioritized eating and broke her school day up by exercising – a habit she’s planning on keeping this fall on campus at the <a href="https://www.tpasc.ca">Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>“That really helped me stay energized for my schoolwork and made it so it didn’t feel like some endless task I had to do,” she says. “Taking breaks was important.”</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-add-new-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Add new story tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/back-school-2024" hreflang="en">Back to School 2024</a></div> </div> </div> Thu, 15 Aug 2024 14:51:17 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 309020 at StarRez Portal, Residence Application and Information System /node/308665 <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">StarRez Portal, Residence Application and Information System</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>laurie.bulchak</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-07-27T15:20:24-04:00" title="Saturday, July 27, 2024 - In February, Թϱ announced that it acquired a <a href="/news/win-students-u-t-acquires-20-cent-privately-owned-campusone-residence">20-per-cent stake in the CampusOne residence building</a> located near the St. George campus in a deal that gives the university preferential access to as many as 890 beds.</p> <p>The university has also made headway on a number of new student residence buildings including <a href="https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/residences/first-year-building">Harmony Commons</a>, which opened at Թϱ Scarborough last fall; the <a href="https://spacesandexperiences.utoronto.ca/housing/introducing-oak-house-student-residence/">Oak House residence</a> on Spadina Avenue, which is currently under construction; and the <a href="https://governingcouncil.utoronto.ca/system/files/agenda-items/20240208_UTM_CAC_02P_0.pdf">Phase IX Residence</a> at Թϱ Mississauga, which is expected to be open in summer 2026.</p> <p>As for SpacesShared, the platform provides yet another housing option for students while fostering mutually beneficial intergenerational interactions. SpacesShared also offers students the option of receiving discounts on their rent in exchange for helping with specific household tasks and chores.</p> <p>“Home-sharing allows us to use the capacity that already exists in the community,” said <strong>Jackie Tanner</strong>, co-founder and chief experience officer at SpacesShared, who earned her master’s degree at Թϱ’s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work. “Older adults get to put their spare bedrooms toward earning extra income and getting a little bit of extra help around the house, and students get to find safe housing close to campus.”</p> <p>After being vetted, both students and potential hosts set up a profile sharing information about themselves, including interests, hobbies and expectations around use of shared spaces in the home, guests, dietary restrictions and other lifestyle preferences. When a student reaches out to a prospective host, the pair can exchange messages and have video chats on the platform, with SpacesShared providing a comprehensive discussion guide to help determine the best fit. If the pair agree on a home-sharing arrangement, SpacesShared drafts an agreement for both parties to sign. Students then pay first and last months’ rent as a deposit – with the amount only forwarded to the host after the student confirms move-in.</p> <p>SpacesShared then follows up with regular check-ins, with both hosts and students able to contact customer service for support.</p> <p>“By pairing up these two demographics who have so much to offer one another, our aim is to provide a new way to facilitate a very old concept – home-sharing,” said co-founder and CEO <strong>Rylan Kinnon</strong>, who earned an honours bachelor of arts with a political science specialist and a minor in philosophy and history at Թϱ.</p> <p>“We’re excited to be working with Թϱ to create housing relationships that are beneficial to both students and older adults.”</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Mon, 15 Jul 2024 18:41:27 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 308436 at Թϱ ranked second among North American public universities, among top 25 globally: QS World University Rankings /news/u-t-ranked-second-among-north-american-public-universities-among-top-25-globally-qs-world <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Թϱ ranked second among North American public universities, among top 25 globally: QS World University Rankings</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-06/UofT19612_UTM-Maanjiwe-nendamowinan-13-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=OcuE_R-i 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-06/UofT19612_UTM-Maanjiwe-nendamowinan-13-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=unacUmqo 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-06/UofT19612_UTM-Maanjiwe-nendamowinan-13-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=17W3suiH 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-06/UofT19612_UTM-Maanjiwe-nendamowinan-13-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=OcuE_R-i" alt="Exterior of Maanjiwe nendamowinan on a sunny summer day"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Christopher.Sorensen</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-06-11T10:11:38-04:00" title="Tuesday, June 11, 2024 - I belong here and have a space in post-secondary education,’” says Longboat, a Mohawk and Cree bead artist and educator based in Toronto.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“I hope the message cycles down to the younger generations – the youth who are now entering post-secondary education – and they can feel that they have a place here, too.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Originally from Six Nations of the Grand River, Longboat began beading when she was 14 years old in an effort to connect with her community. Her design for the stole was inspired by the nature she saw when she walked around the university.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“Some of the elements include oak leaves, acorns – there are pine needles all around the beaded piece,” she says. “The central flower, blue poppy flower and then the trillium flower at the top. There’s a beaver at the bottom of the beadwork, which is representative of the University of Toronto symbols.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Another element in the beadwork is the waterways. If you look closely, there are what look like streams flowing from the top to the bottom of the work and that represents the waterways in Toronto that are connected to the area.”&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-center"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/scale_image_750_width_/public/2024-05/Katie-Longboat_Polina-Teif-5-crop.jpg?itok=B47q4gVT" width="750" height="500" alt="&quot;&quot;" class="image-style-scale-image-750-width-"> </div> </div> <figcaption><em>The stole's design was inspired by the nature Longboat observed at Թϱ</em>&nbsp;<em>(photo by Polina Teif)</em></figcaption> </figure> <p><strong>Shannon Simpson</strong>, senior director of the Office of Indigenous Initiatives, met with Indigenous leaders from the three campuses to discuss potential themes for the stole. Թϱ’s Council of Indigenous Initiatives was also involved in the process.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“We wanted something that represents all three campuses and something that signifies the land Թϱ sits on,” Simpson says. “[But] we didn’t want to get in the way of the creative process.”&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/2024-05/UofT93580_820A0915-crop.jpg" width="300" height="300" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> </div> <figcaption><em>Shannon Simpson (photo by Johnny Guatto)</em></figcaption> </figure> <p>Using two different techniques, Longboat created two separate pieces for convocation – the beadwork for the stole and a beaded stem to hold the Eagle Feather. She used flat-stitch beading for the stole and peyote-stitch bead weaving for the stem of the feather.&nbsp;</p> <p>In 2017, the Steering Committee for the University of Toronto Response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada released its final report, <a href="https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/wp-content/uploads/sites/155/2018/05/Final-Report-TRC.pdf">Wecheehetowin</a>. It called on the university to act in six key areas to engage in the ongoing process of reconciliation. A Convocation Advisory Review Committee was subsequently formed with a mandate that included reviewing ceremony elements with a goal to preserve Թϱ’s traditions while incorporating Indigenous cultures.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Simpson emphasizes the importance of inclusion and notes that Indigenous students previously felt under-represented.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“I think for a lot of our students, many of them have said they’re the first person in their family to attend a post-secondary institution, or that they feel like they’re the only Indigenous student in many of their classes,” she says.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“By the time they get their degree, they had a lot of firsts in their journey. To see these elements in their convocation, to see the recognition – I think that makes them feel like Indigenous students matter at Թϱ and that their experience has been valued.”&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-center"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/scale_image_750_width_/public/2024-05/Katie-Longboat_Polina-Teif-2-crop.jpg?itok=lXSxhO6M" width="750" height="500" alt="&quot;&quot;" class="image-style-scale-image-750-width-"> </div> </div> <figcaption><em>Originally from Six Nations of the Grand River, Longboat began beading when she was 14 years old (photo by Polina Teif)</em></figcaption> </figure> <p>Simpson says she is excited to have Longboat’s work featured in Թϱ’s convocation ceremonies.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“Katie does beautiful work and she’s a member of one of our host nations,” she says. “So, that was really important to us as well – to have someone from one of our local communities really be involved in this way.”&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>The addition of the beaded stole, Eagle Feather and Eagle Feather Bearer are among several initiatives that seek to make convocation more inclusive for Indigenous students. Others include a land acknowledgment and a protocol where Indigenous graduands can choose to wear traditional regalia with academic hood in lieu of an academic gown to their ceremonies.&nbsp;</p> <p>Simpson says the university’s journey to reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples still requires much work and relationship-building – but that the recent changes are steps in the right direction.&nbsp;</p> <p>Longboat, meanwhile, hopes the stole’s wearers feel a sense of pride and that Indigenous students receive its intended message: “We belong here.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-oembed-video field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item"><iframe src="/media/oembed?url=https%3A//youtu.be/VkjuwOqW1RM&amp;max_width=0&amp;max_height=0&amp;hash=VwvvBKI8wn8AcaJ4lq3GZ-t-HmxborNw3toOTeSn9YQ" width="200" height="113" class="media-oembed-content" loading="eager" title="First-ever Indigenous beaded stole introduced to Թϱ’s convocation ceremonies"></iframe> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Thu, 30 May 2024 14:18:50 +0000 mattimar 307956 at
