The companys online store of tutoring materials indicates that coursepacks from many other 勛圖惇蹋 courses are also being sold by the company.

The universitys lawsuit is seeking monetary damages, the return of the copyrighted materials and an injunction to stop any further copyright infringement. 勛圖惇蹋 has also asked for a full accounting and disgorgement of all revenues earned directly or indirectly from the sale of all products that contain university material, as well as an award of punitive and exemplary damages. 勛圖惇蹋 has committed to use any funds obtained from the lawsuit for student academic supports.

According to the companys website, it offers more than 1,000 Canadian university course offerings every term and has served more than 210,000 students at universities across Canada. Weekly course packages are priced as high as $1,449.

The website states that Easy EDU offers its services to students at all three 勛圖惇蹋 campuses, as well as at the University of Waterloo, York University, McGill University, the University of British Columbia, the University of Alberta and other higher education institutions across Canada.

The statement of claim alleges the company also infringed the professors moral rights by creating the impression within the educational community, and among students who have purchased Easy EDUs services, that the professors and the university have endorsed the company to use their work.

I have devoted years to preparing materials for my students. To have a company profit from the unauthorized use of my intellectual property is incredibly wrong. It is theft, said Gazzale. I am also saddened that tutoring companies are pushing the approach of trying to game the system, as opposed to trying to help students learn the material.

Gazzale added that, during the pandemic, the economics department put extra effort into helping students who were facing challenges by offering extended online office hours and adjusting the hours of its free peer tutoring services to better serve students abroad.

勛圖惇蹋, meanwhile, provides a range of academic supports which students can access as part of their tuition, including 14 writing centres that offer one-on-one support, learning strategists, organized study groups, old exam banks, workshops and an academic success centre. International students also have access to additional workshops upon arrival and throughout the year.

The lawsuit alleges that Easy EDU also unfairly exploits students who, in good faith, pay significant fees for tutoring that can lead to life-altering consequences stemming from sanctions for academic misconduct. 勛圖惇蹋 alleges that in providing tutoring services, Easy EDU may in some cases be providing students with unauthorized academic assistance where it is not permitted, an offence under the universitys Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters. That can lead and has led to sanctions for academic misconduct and cheating, including suspensions. For international students, suspensions can lead to cancellation of their study permits and a forced return to their home country.

Assistant Professor Taniguchi, whose linguistics courses attract many international students, expressed disappointment that Easy EDU preys on students fears of not doing well in an unfamiliar setting and potentially disappointing their family.

Easy EDU exploits that fear and leads students down the path of possible academic offences, she said. Students are much better off asking for help from their 勛圖惇蹋 professors or teaching assistants than paying for a tutoring service that is violating copyright law.

Before launching the lawsuit, 勛圖惇蹋 met with a representative of Easy EDU in October 2020 to discuss issues of academic infringement and integrity. In December 2020, Easy EDU stated in an email to the university that it would review its materials and ensure there is absolutely no copyright infringement.

According to the statement of claim, however, Easy EDU continued to create and sell tutoring packages that infringed copyright. The CRCSS reported the results of its review in February 2021.

The UTGSU has had a year to implement the ruling of the CRCSS, said Vice-President and Provost Cheryl Regehr. The university administration calls upon the Graduate Students Union to now reconsider their inaction and implement the recommendations of the CRCSS.

We would also remind all units and student organizations that the universitys Statement on Freedom of Speech states that the Universitys primary obligation is to protect the free speech of all involved. Debate must not be limited by preordaining conclusions. Individuals can also not be forced to hold specific views on controversial issues in order to participate in any aspect of university life.

The provost cited several reasons for this decision, including that clauses of the UTGSU own bylaws do not permit all members of the UTGSU to participate fully in the activities of the BDS caucus, as they exclude participation on the basis of beliefs.

In February 2021, the independent panel found that some of the UTGSU bylaws related to the BDS caucus violate the 勛圖惇蹋 Policy on Open, Accessible and Democratic Autonomous Student Organizations, as well as UTGSUs own Anti-Discrimination Policy, on the basis of political beliefs or nationality. The panel recommended to UTGSU that the BDS caucus be structured in a way that allows for debate and discussion of a range of topics and allows members to opt out of the fee. This was noted as particularly important given that all UTGSU members are currently required to support the BDS caucus through compulsory fees.

The panel did not call for the BDS caucus to be abolished. It also did not consider whether the BDS movement is antisemitic.

The provost noted that while UTGSU has the freedom to choose to support the BDS movement and to have a BDS caucus, the society also has a responsibility to ensure that no UTGSU activities discriminate against its members on the basis of nationality, religion, or political views, and that UTGSU members are welcome to participate in all activities of the society.

Anti-Semitism Working Group report

The decision follows the recent publication of the report of the 勛圖惇蹋 Anti-Semitism Working Group, and the full endorsement of their recommendations by the universitys senior leaders. The working group recommended that academic units, administrative units, and student organizations in which enrollment is mandatory must not make participation in their activities or access to their resources conditional on taking a particular position on any controversial question.

It also stated that preconditions including taking a position on an issue must not be attached to participation in academic events or discussions, or in extra- or co-curricular events and programs, or for standing for office in student organizations or academic administrative leadership positions.

勛圖惇蹋 has long affirmed that student societies and recognized campus groups are autonomous organizations. It holds freedom of thought, inquiry and speech as among its highest ideals, and such freedoms apply to its student body. However, autonomy must be exercised in a way that complies with the law and university policies.

The CRCSS exists to consider complaints about student societies, when internal society complaint mechanisms have been unable to find a resolution. For each decision, a panel of students is selected to review the complaint from a pool of representatives nominated by each of the student societies. The CRCSS acts independently from the university administration, as set out in the Policy on Open, Accessible, Democratic Autonomous Student Organizations.

News home page banner

Off

Tue, 08 Mar 2022 21:41:16 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 173271 at The public health evidence is clear: Salvatore Spadafora on 勛圖惇蹋s vaccine requirement /news/public-health-evidence-clear-salvatore-spadafora-u-t-s-vaccine-requirement The public health evidence is clear: Salvatore Spadafora on 勛圖惇蹋s vaccine requirement

Christopher.Sorensen Wed, 08/11/2021 - 13:17

Cutline

Stefan Juckes, a patient-facing learner from 勛圖惇蹋s Faculty of Dentistry, receives a COVID-19 vaccination at a 勛圖惇蹋-hosted clinic on the St. George campus earlier this year (photo by Johnny Guatto)

勛圖惇蹋 Team

Topic

Our Community

Coronavirus

Temerty Faculty of Medicine

UTogether

As it prepares for a safe return to campus this fall, the University of Toronto has announced a vaccination requirement and implemented a comprehensive 12-step plan for students, staff, faculty and librarians that is informed by the latest public health guidance.

勛圖惇蹋 will require all those intending to be on campus be fully vaccinated as vaccines have proven to be one of the most effective ways to minimize the dangers of COVID-19.

The public health evidence is clear: Vaccination provides the best protection from COVID-19, says Professor Salvatore Spadafora, special adviser to 勛圖惇蹋s president on COVID-19 and senior adviser to the dean of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

Students living in residence and community members engaging in certain activities are required to be vaccinated. Further guidance is expected from the province in early August, which 勛圖惇蹋 will follow in conjunction from guidance from local public health authorities.

勛圖惇蹋 is encouraged by the uptake of vaccinations in Ontario and welcomes the provincial governments support for efforts to plan a safe return to campus this fall, said Professor Salvatore Spadafora, a special adviser to 勛圖惇蹋s president on COVID-19 and senior adviser to the dean of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

We are looking forward to resuming in-person learning, campus activities and other experiences in keeping with the latest public health guidance.

At 勛圖惇蹋, planning is already well underway for a safe resumption of in-person classes, with faculties and divisions tailoring their individual plans to meet their unique needs. Residences, meanwhile, are requiring students to be vaccinated in an effort to provide a safe, welcoming and enjoyable experience that is conducive to learning and community-building. 勛圖惇蹋 will also require vaccinations for certain activities presenting higher risk and require all community members to self-declare their vaccination status.

Several other precautions have been taken across the three campuses to curb the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Building ventilation systems are being inspected, air filters have been upgraded where necessary and air purifiers are being added to classrooms as needed. Everyone coming to campus will be required to complete a self-reported health screening and wear face masks indoors.

勛圖惇蹋 also continues to work with local public health units to promote vaccine information and has hosted vaccination clinics on its three campuses.

Here are 12 ways 勛圖惇蹋 is planning for a safe return of in-person instruction this fall:

1. UCheck health screening

Before visiting campus, everyone students, faculty, staff, librarians, researchers and even contractors must complete a health screening. The easiest way to do this is by using the universitys online self-assessment tool, UCheck. A paper-based process is also available.

The UCheck questionnaire has been updated to reflect the latest public health guidance, takes just a few minutes to complete and can be accessed via smartphone, tablet or desktop. Submitted data is encrypted in transit and storage to protect users privacy.

2. Scheduling changes and capacity limits

Across the university, faculties and divisions are working on plans tailored to meet their individual needs.

Everyone is committed to providing the rich academic and campus experience for which 勛圖惇蹋 is known and its unlikely there will be a one-size-fits-all approach, said Ron Saporta, chief operating officer, property services and sustainability.

We are reviewing our strategy on a regular basis and will be taking into account any changes to public health guidelines.

With capacity restrictions being relaxed across the province, 勛圖惇蹋 anticipates that such limits will be lifted for educational spaces by this fall and will continue to monitor public health directions making updates to its plans when appropriate.

3. Physical distancing measures

Saporta said 勛圖惇蹋 is preparing for a variety of scenarios, including the possibility physical distancing may no longer be required indoors this fall so long as masks are worn.

We will be able to adapt quickly using an evidence-informed approach that adheres to evolving guidelines and, most importantly, seeks to keep our community safe, he said.

In the meantime, the university has taken steps to re-orient traffic flow in buildings by posting signage and rearranging furniture and other features to help people maintain a distance from one another if required.

4. Non-medical face masks

The universitys policy requiring non-medical masks to be worn in all indoor spaces will remain in effect in accordance with evolving public health guidelines. 勛圖惇蹋s mask policy and allowable exclusions, as well as answers to frequently asked questions about masks, can all be found on the UTogether site and Chapter 6 of the General Workplace Guideline (GWG).

Health Canada and Toronto Public Health now recommend wearing a well-fitted mask with at least two layers of tightly woven fabric, such as cotton, plus a third middle layer of filter-type fabric, such as non-woven polypropylene.

5. Enhanced cleaning and more sanitizing stations

The university has installed thousands of touchless hand sanitizing stations and sanitizing wipe dispensers across the three campuses. 勛圖惇蹋 has also ramped up cleaning of common-use areas such as classrooms, libraries, washrooms and lobbies.

Staff frequently wipe down and disinfect high-touch surfaces like door handles, handrails and elevator buttons.

6. Industry-leading classroom ventilation targets

Classrooms that will be used for in-person teaching across the three campuses will be equipped for six equivalent air changes per hour, the same standard applied to patient examination rooms, walk-in clinics and other health-care settings.

勛圖惇蹋 consulted outside experts in adopting its ventilation standard.

In the context of the pandemic, weve been on top of recommended COVID-19 ventilation safety measures, said Jelena Vulovic-Basic, a senior manager, operations and maintenance at 勛圖惇蹋 Facilities & Services.

7. Upgrading building ventilation and air filtration

The university continues to upgrade and monitor heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment where necessary as part of its HVAC strategy. That includes monitoring and maintaining upgraded air filters that capture a greater percentage of smaller particles and outfitting some classrooms with a local air filtration device with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters.

All building ventilation systems at 勛圖惇蹋 will continue to undergo regular maintenance to ensure air is clean and flowing into and out of buildings properly.

As an additional measure, the university plans to flush air from enclosed spaces prior to occupancy.

We turn on the ventilation system two hours before anyone walks through the door, filling the building with clean air, Saporta said.

8. Contact tracing through QR codes

As part of a voluntary pilot project, people entering some buildings will see posters encouraging them to use UCheck to scan a QR code located at the entrances. The scans will help with contact tracing in the event of a confirmed case of COVID-19.

If we have an issue, Occupational Health Services can notify people directly about a potential exposure, said Cathy Eberts, 勛圖惇蹋s director, enterprise applications and deputy chief information officer.

Its all through UCheck, so your information is encrypted and only accessible by our occupational health nurse if we need to do contract tracing.

9. Monitoring wastewater in large residences

A pilot project is underway at 勛圖惇蹋 to monitor sewage for the virus that causes COVID-19.

Some municipalities, including Ottawa, have been using this method to detect the virus often before those who are infected realize they are sick.

At 勛圖惇蹋, the plan is to monitor wastewater from residences that house about 100 people or more and could be expanded in the future.

The approach here which was successfully tested during a pilot earlier this year is we monitor building wastewater for pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic cases of COVID-19, and if we find it then we implement our outbreak prevention protocol, Saporta said.

10. Rapid screening

The university is also piloting rapid antigen testing for 勛圖惇蹋 staff whose role requires frequent face-to-face interaction with the public, such as those working in dentistry and health and wellness.

The screening program was developed by the Creative Destruction Lab a business accelerator affiliated with the Rotman School of Management and has been used by the likes of Air Canada and Scotiabank.

The BD Veritor System uses nasal swabs to detect SARS-CoV-2.

The test, which returns a result in as little as 15 minutes, can accurately identify the presence of the coronavirus roughly 85 per cent of the time and can accurately eliminate those who are not infected nearly 100 per cent of the time. Those who test positive will be referred for further testing.

The pilot will expand to include at-home rapid screening kits and more 勛圖惇蹋 community members in the fall, including those living in residence who are exempted from vaccination and those who respond no or prefer not to answer when completing a vaccination self-declaration form. Rapid testing will also be used in connection with the wastewater monitoring initiative.

11. Department-specific COVID-19 guidelines and tools

Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, 勛圖惇蹋 is asking each department to adapt the universitys and indeed broader public health guidelines to its own specific circumstances.

Its important to contextualize general guidelines to the space where you work, said Gina Trubiani, 勛圖惇蹋s director, occupational health and safety.

This allows for a nimbler, more flexible response so departments can apply the general guidelines based on their circumstances.

More information on department-specific COVID-19 guidelines and tools can be found on the Human Resources & Equity webpage on returning to campus, as well as the Environmental Health & Safety COVID-19 information webpage.

12.
