Ellie Hisama, professor and dean of the Faculty of Music, has been named an honorary member of the American Musicological Society.

Honorary members are selected on the basis of their extraordinary contributions to the society and to the study and teaching of music.

Hisama, who is also a professor emerita at Columbia University, was recognized for her contributions to musicology, her distinguished teaching career and her commitment to diversity, inclusion and ethics. "Equally at home in the fields of music theory and musicology, Hisama’s writings on the role of gender, sexuality and race in musical modernity cover subjects ranging from 20th-century modernists to hip hop," the American Musicological Society noted in its citation.

The author of Gendering Musical Modernism and many articles in an array of publications, Hisama has collaborated with numerous regional and international bodies dedicated to anti-racist agendas in the arts and in the academy.

Walter Tavares, an assistant professor in the department of health and society at �Թϱ�� Scarborough, has been awarded King Charles III’s Coronation Medal.

The award, which was created to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III on May 6, 2023, is awarded to those who have made a significant contribution to Canada.

Tavares was recognized for his contributions to the field of paramedicine, which include helping establish �Թϱ�� Scarborough's specialist program in paramedicine – Canada's first undergraduate degree program in the field – and serving as inaugural director of the Paramedicine Collaborative in the department of family and community medicine at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

Tavares also partnered with the Paramedic Association of Canada to create guiding principles for the future of paramedicine, and spearheaded Canada's first international paramedic exchange program. He is founder of the McNally Project, a research initiative aimed at building research capacity and contributions within paramedicine.

“These accomplishments and roles reflect the collective efforts of numerous individuals, teams, learners, and leaders in paramedicine and beyond, with whom I have been privileged to collaborate,” says Tavares. “I am deeply grateful for these opportunities, humbled by this recognition, and inspired to continue contributing to the advancement of the profession.”

Geoffrey Hinton, a University Professor Emeritus of computer science at the University of Toronto, has been named one of five recipients of the 2024 VinFuture Grand Prize.

The US$3-million prize is presented by the Vietnam-based non-profit VinFuture Foundation in recognition of scientific advances that support the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

Hinton, widely regarded as the "godfather of AI," was recognized for his research on neural networks and deep learning algorithms. He shares the VinFuture Grand Prize with Université de Montréal's Yoshua Bengio, Stanford University's Fei-Fei Li, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun (Jensen) Huang and Facebook AI Research scientist Yann LeCun.

In a video message, Hinton said he was honoured to share the award with such an esteemed group of researchers – including his fellow A.M Turing Award-winners Bengio and LeCun. “The three of us spent our whole lives developing the technology of neural networks,” Hinton said. “I’m very happy to see that the VinFuture Prize recognizes the contributions of Jensen Huang in developing the kind of compute and software required for artificial intelligence, and Fei-Fei Li in providing the big data that was needed to prove that it worked.”

The recognition comes on the heels of Hinton receiving the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Stephen Scherer, chief of research at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and professor in the department of molecular genetics in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, has received the Debrecen Award for Molecular Medicine.

Presented by the University of Debrecen in Hungary, the award recognizes scientists who have made significant advancements in the field of molecular medicine, and whose pioneering research has had a profound impact on modern patient care.

Scherer, the director of the Centre for Applied Genomics and senior scientist in the genetics and genome biology program at SickKids, was recognized for his contributions to the discovery of genome-wide copy number variation and its role in influencing genes implicated in numerous medical conditions, particularly autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

“I am deeply grateful to the University of Debrecen for this award and remain dedicated to deciphering the complexities of the human genome, both for the advancement of genomic research and for the ultimate goal of enhancing patient care,” says Scherer, who is also the director of the McLaughlin Centre at Temerty.

Ronald Cohn, president and CEO of SickKids and professor of molecular genetics at Temerty, said Scherer's work has had a "profound impact" on the scientific community and patients around the world. "His scientific leadership and commitment to translational research to support clinical diagnostics and therapeutic development has not only bolstered our institution’s global reputation in genomic science but also underpins our Precision Child Health movement," Cohn said.

Samantha Mayo and Kristin Cleverley, associate professors in the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, have been named fellows of the American Academy of Nursing for 2024.

The academy selects fellows whose programs of research and international impact align with their mission to enhance health equity for vulnerable populations.

“I am grateful to be recognized among such leading global nurse researchers," says Mayo, an expert on hematological cancer survivorship. "Not only does this fellowship recognize the contributions of my own research, but also the critical role of oncology nursing research in advancing the health systems that support patients and families affected by cancer."

“To be named a 2024 fellow is an honour and demonstrates the profound research expertise of nurses on the global stage," says Cleverley, whose research focuses on youth mental health and care transitions. "I am grateful not only for the recognition this brings me as a researcher, but also for the recognition this brings to the field of student and youth mental health research.”

Mayo and Cleverley were celebrated during an induction ceremony held in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 2.

Darcy Fehlings, a senior clinician scientist and developmental pediatrician at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and professor in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine's department of paediatrics, has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM).

The prestigious award is granted to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to advance the health and well-being of individuals with cerebral palsy and other childhood-onset disabilities.

Fehlings has devoted her clinical and research work toward enabling meaningful and healthy futures for children and youth living with cerebral palsy. Her work centres on the innovation and evaluation of interventions for children with cerebral palsy.

Fehlings says she is "deeply honoured" to receive the award, and highlighted her belief in collaborative science to advancing research on cerebral palsy. "From a research perspective, my hope is to move boldly forward in partnership with individuals with cerebral palsy and their families to innovate, evaluate and promote ‘positively disruptive’ interventions that will make a positive difference in the well-being of children with cerebral palsy and their families."

Nisrin Elamin, an assistant professor in the Faculty of Arts & Science's department of anthropology, has received the Sam Dubal Memorial Award for Anti-Colonialism and Racial Justice from the American Anthropological Association.

This award honours anthropologists who have demonstrated a deep commitment to anti-colonial and racial justice in any world region.

Elamin's research traces the spatialized geography of imperial power in Sudan and beyond, while also paying attention to processes and dynamics that threaten to destabilize such power. Her insights and analyses have taken on greater importance ever since war erupted between different factions of Sudan’s military coup regime in April 2023.

Since 2023, she has played a leading role in developing the Sudan Solidarity Collective with �Թϱ�� students. The Collective has raised around $350,000 for volunteer-run emergency response rooms in the areas hardest hit by Sudan's war, as well as farmers’ unions.

Marie-Josée Fortin, a University Professor in the department of ecology and evolutionary biology in the Faculty of Arts & Science, has been awarded the 2024 Massey Medal by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.

The Massey Medal is presented annually in recognition of outstanding career achievement in the exploration, development or description of the geography of Canada.

Fortin, who holds a Canada Research Chair in Spatial Ecology, is recognized for her groundbreaking work in spatial ecology, a field that examines how the spatial distribution of organisms, populations and landscapes affects ecological dynamics. Her research has unified spatial analysis, ecological theory and statistical network frameworks to model species’ spatial interactions; it has also been used to propose novel ways to maintain species’ persistence in the face of climate change.

“I am tremendously honored that this prestigious Canadian award has recognized my expertise in spatial analysis and empirical research of Canadian ecosystems,” Fortin said.

"Marie-Josée Fortin has made essential contributions to knowledge and practice in the field of spatial ecology," said Antoinette Handley, acting dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science. "Her pioneering insights launched the field of spatial analysis in ecology, and her discoveries have transformed how spatial ecological data are analyzed. I extend my warmest congratulations to Professor Fortin on her receipt of this year’s Massey Medal."

The University of Toronto has received a congratulatory scroll from the City of Toronto in recognition of its leadership in sustainability.

�Թϱ�� was awarded the scroll for its contributions as a founding member of the Green Will Initiative, which brings together large organizations that are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the City of Toronto’s net-zero strategy.

The scroll was presented by Toronto’s Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie at Hart House and accepted by Scott Hendershot, senior manager at �Թϱ��’s Sustainability Office, and Catherine Thorn, director, sustainability and energy management, on behalf of the university.

“�Թϱ�� is proud to take on a leadership role in advancing environmental sustainability in the region by undertaking initiatives that deliver dramatic and rapid emissions reductions,” said Ron Saporta, chief operating officer, property services and sustainability. “Today’s recognition affirms that we’re on the right track as we pursue our ambition of becoming climate-positive, and in doing so, support the City of Toronto’s aggressive climate action strategy.”

“We look forward to continuing to work closely with our colleagues in the City of Toronto to further advance our shared aim of a more sustainable future.”

Lynette Ong, a professor in the Faculty of Arts & Science’s department of political science and the Asian Institute at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, has received the 2024 Insight Award from the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

One of SSHRC’s annual Impact Awards, the Insight Award recognizes scholars whose work has made a significant contribution to knowledge and understanding about people, societies and the world.

A renowned scholar of authoritarianism, contentious politics and development in China, Ong has conducted on-the-ground research in the country since the late 1990s. She says she’s pleasantly surprised at winning the Insight Award.

“I’d like to thank the people who have helped me along the way,” says Ong, a faculty fellow at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology & Society and acting director of the Munk School’s Contemporary Asian Studies program. “As an inherently private person, I need to adjust to this public recognition. I just hope I can pay it forward and mentor other young researchers.”

“Lynette’s courageous research has taken her to areas that many would hesitate to explore,” says Antoinette Handley, acting dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science and professor of political science. “Her scholarship has provided valuable perspectives and ongoing insights into the workings of political repression in China. It is my pleasure to congratulate her on this significant recognition from SSHRC.”
