Walter Tavares, an assistant professor in the department of health and society at �Թϱ�� Scarborough, has been awarded King Charles III’s Coronation Medal.

The award, which was created to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III on May 6, 2023, is awarded to those who have made a significant contribution to Canada.

Tavares was recognized for his contributions to the field of paramedicine, which include helping establish �Թϱ�� Scarborough's specialist program in paramedicine – Canada's first undergraduate degree program in the field – and serving as inaugural director of the Paramedicine Collaborative in the department of family and community medicine at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

Tavares also partnered with the Paramedic Association of Canada to create guiding principles for the future of paramedicine, and spearheaded Canada's first international paramedic exchange program. He is founder of the McNally Project, a research initiative aimed at building research capacity and contributions within paramedicine.

“These accomplishments and roles reflect the collective efforts of numerous individuals, teams, learners, and leaders in paramedicine and beyond, with whom I have been privileged to collaborate,” says Tavares. “I am deeply grateful for these opportunities, humbled by this recognition, and inspired to continue contributing to the advancement of the profession.”

Six faculty members at the University of Toronto – renowned for their pathbreaking leadership in a wide range of disciplines – have been appointed to the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

“From scientific advances in astrophysics, atmospheric physics and social psychology to timely leadership in climate governance, computer security and privacy, and sexually transmitted infection prevention, these scholars and scientists are making an impact on issues that affect the lives of people across Canada and around the world,” says Leah Cowen, �Թϱ��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“The University of Toronto congratulates them on this significant recognition.”

The new college members are:

Jo Bovy of the David A. Dunlap department of astronomy and astrophysics in the Faculty of Arts & Science
Ann Burchell of Unity Health and the department of family and community medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine
Jessica Green of the department of political science in the Faculty of Arts & Science
Nicolas Papernot of the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering
Nicholas Rule of the department of psychology in the Faculty of Arts & Science; vice-principal academic and dean, �Թϱ�� Mississauga
Debra Wunch of the department of physics in the Faculty of Arts & Science

Each faculty member receives a seven-year membership in the college, which recognizes and supports academic leadership and collaboration among those who have received their PhDs within the last 15 years.

Associate Professor Curtis Handford of the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine and St. Michael’s Hospital is Ontario’s Family Physician of the Year.

The College of Family Physicians of Canada's Reg L. Perkin Family Physician of the Year Award recognizes family physicians who provide exceptional patient care and improve the health of communities and well-being of society.

A faculty member of the department of family and community medicine at �Թϱ�� for 15 years, Handford has mentored students from across Canada in a highly-sought elective course on inner city family medicine, influencing many to choose a career in family medicine.

“Dr. Handford treats his patients with equal respect and dignity,” says Dr. Lauren Welsh, a former trainee and now colleague. “His ability to build relationships with his patients is core to his ability to deliver compassionate and patient-centred care.”

Renowned for his collaborations with primary care providers, community partners and acute care stakeholders to improve care systems for patients and their caregivers, Handford also led the development of a clinical practice guideline for the use of buprenorphine/naloxone as an opioid maintenance treatment, the first of its kind in Canada. Despite his many accomplishments, says Dr. Karen Weyman, the site chief at St. Michael’s Hospital Department of Family and Community Medicine, “Dr. Handford remains a humble and generous colleague who consistently demonstrates an exemplary level of thoughtfulness, collegiality and professionalism to which we can all aspire.”
